Previously sold at the St. Louis Car Museum is a very low mileage 1962 Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster surviving beautifully from central Texas! This Rangoon Red T-Bird remains a very solid example having spent the majority of its life in the south. A ready to enjoy example ll features a factory correct 390ci V8 with Cruise-O-Matic and optioned with rare air conditioning.
History Of Ford's Thunderbird Model:
In 1962, Ford Motor Co. introduced a limited production option for their Thunderbird model called the “Sports Roadster Package” that would only be produced for 2 years. This limited edition package included a special fiberglass tonneau cover to completely cover the rear seats making the car appear as a 2-seater roadster. To highlight this option, the car received chrome 14” Kelsey Hayes 48-spoke wire wheels, passenger grab bar, and special Roadster emblems as standard equipment. In addition to it's convenient features, the soft top was designed to fully operate without the removal of the tonneau and storage space underneath the tonneau allowed for personal items to be concealed on top of the rear seats. There would be only 1,427 Sports roadsters produced in 1962, and of those, the first 465 cars were all in a Rangoon Red over Black color combination.
About Our Sold Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster Model:
We were proud to represent the sale of a very nicely kept 1962 Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster with a beautiful exterior that was last refinished sometime in the 1990's in correct J-code Rangoon Red while maintaining, what appears to be, its factory original Black vinyl interior. The new black convertible top is in excellent condition! It remains a terrific driver to this day with only 54,408 miles showing on the odometer. Options include a date-code correct 390ci V8 4-barrel and Cruise-O-Matic transmission, Magicaire heater/defrost, rare Select-Aire factory air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, Tilt-away steering column, thin stripe whitewall tires, all tinted glass, push button Thunderbird AM/FM radio, windshield washer, outside mirror, and heavy-duty battery!
According to the trim tag, this example was built in April 1962 and was delivered new through the Chicago Ordering District, although it is believed to have spent the majority of its life in Texas. Records provided show it to have been maintained by an Austin, Texas owner until 1986, where it would then sell to a Kilgore, TX collector in December 1986 who would maintain possession until 2014. This lovely T-Bird received a high quality repaint at some point during his care. It then found a new owner from Austin, TX with approximately 53,000 miles on the odometer. Due to it's many years of being garaged kept, along with, it's limited use by its previous owner, the new owner would began with brake improvements to include new brake master cylinder and booster along with fresh brake fluid in the system, one wheel cylinder and adjustments as needed; the install of a new convertible top pump assembly, switching valves, hydraulic control solenoids, circuit breaker, with new deck lid limit switch to bring the power top into full working order. At the time, this classic Thunderbird would have only 53,511 miles on the odometer.
Additionally, a new replacement top and rear window were fitted with fresh weather stripping later that same year in October 2015. The steering box was replaced, a new power steering pump installed, idler arm replaced, new front and rear shocks fitted, new Coker Classic 215/75R14 radial tires mounted (including spare tire), alignment performed, new exhaust manifold and complete exhaust system installed, and new battery were invested into this worthy Sports Roadster in April 2016. And the brake system was flushed again for good measure with new DOT4 fluid in September 2016 at 53,905 miles.
Remarkably, the interior possesses its original dash, console, door panels, and black seat upholstery still in wonderful condition, although the interior floor carpet appears newer and is now fitted with a custom 4-piece Coco floor mat set. More recently, we installed a complete trunk compartment matting set, plus a complete overhaul to the original transmission with new bands, gaskets, and shaft seals in July 2020. Today, the odometer reads only 54,408 miles. It will come with an owner's manual, shop manual, vintage magazines detailing the Sports Roadster, service receipts, and some ownership registration records. Don't miss this wonderful opportunity to own a rare piece of early Thunderbird history! Classics of this pedigree and recent service documentation included are sought the world over, and are quickly being purchased by international collectors.
