Quite the step up from the Mark 1, largely in part to listening to their own customers, Jaguar began producing the stylish Mark 2 Saloon sedan in 1959. The Mark 2's attractive luxury presentation looked as sharp as much higher priced English marks, was quite fast, and made a useful everyday sedan, setting forth the motto “Grace, Pace, & Space” by its creator Sir Williams Lyons. It was also known as the Gentleman's Express by gaining favor among Britain's bank robbers as a getaway car!
Jaguar utilized the latest technology in the Mark 2 by providing disc brakes all around as standard equipment on its already proven and sought-after double wishbone suspension with coil springs, telescopic shock absorbers, and anti-roll bar in the front. Jaguar's increased focus on comfort shows not just in the soft leather and walnut wood veneer interior, but also in the front suspension being mounted on a separate sub-frame. Being of unibody design, this saloon sedan really gripped the road and handled quick turns with ease, improving the quality of the road manners while also increasing the space inside the cabin considerably. It was offered with 3 engine choices ranging from 2.4L, 3.4L, and the robust 3.8L engine shared with the XKE including the same block, crank, connecting rods and pistons but different inlet manifold featuring dual SU6 carburation instead of three. Jaguar continued production of the 3.8 Liter Mark 2 until 1967 before being downgraded and re-badged as the 240 and 340.
We are proud to offer this remarkably clean 1965 Jaguar Mark finished in Old English White with supple Red Leather interior. Powering this Mark 2 is its original numbers matching rebuilt DOHC 3.8L Inline 6-cylinder engine producing a stout 220 horsepower and 240 lb. ft. of torque mated to an automatic transmission. This Mark 2 has the benefit of added options including power rack & pinion steering, Ron Davis aluminum radiator with electric fan, rebuilt brakes, alternator conversion kit, and 15” 72-spoke chrome wire wheels wrapped in Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. This Mark 2 had been with a longtime Georgia owner since 1982, who would commence a full restoration in 2010 and completion in late 2013.
With the help of Scott and Jammie Brown, of Brown & Brown Paint & Body, they organized the complete restoration of the body, engine bay, and trunk areas while the engine overhaul was sublet to Brady's Engine Machine Service in Auburn, GA. This included a complete rebuild with lined-honed & bored cylinder walls, line-honed main caps, surfaced block, new .020 over pistons & rings, resized connecting rods, ground crankshaft per journal, & balanced rotating assembly: reconditioned head with new intake & exhaust valves, valve guides, springs, and lifters; new water pump, along with belts, hoses/clamps, ignition components.
The balance of the mechanical work was carried out by Vintage Autoworks, Inc of Tucker, Georgia with a comprehensive overhaul of the complete braking system, entire fuel system with reconditioning fuel tank, aluminum radiator, suspension system with new front & rear springs, Koni shocks, and addition of the power rack & pinion steering system. Brown & Brown Paint & Body would install all exterior chrome trim, handles, bumpers, overriders, etc. as well as all weather stripping, window seals, and stainless steel.
All interior wood was sent to British Autowood for new veneer finish, while the interior was commissioned to K&H European Upholstery for a complete refresh of all soft surfaces. This included applying Dynamat insulation throughout the cabin floor, all new front & rear seat leather, door panels, Wilton wool carpeting, and padded lower dash & center console. The results are quite stunning! After 33 years of ownership, and 2 years to enjoy it post restoration, it would sell to a Monterey, CA collector in March 2015. Upon arrival to California, it would be fully inspected, serviced, and maintained by Classic Coachworks of Monterey for the next 3 years. Under their care, it would receive a newer General Motors 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission to better handle California freeways, along with Pertronix electronic ignition, 3-point seat belts, and rebuilt brakes with new booster servo. This lovely Mark 2 now has worthy improvements only adding to more enjoyment! It settled into the Jefferson City, MO area in December 2018 under the care of another English car collector where it has been since.
Coming with this vehicle is the owner's manual and a complete binder containing many service records, part receipts along with some pictures documenting the repaint process. Both carburetors were recently overhauled in October 2022 with new nitrophyl floats and new banjo fitting seals at the fuel filter. This Jaguar Mark 2 has 71,340 miles on the odometer and remains in great condition inside, outside, and underneath thanks to a well-executed, professional restoration. Any Jaguar enthusiast or classic car collector alike will appreciate the energy and workmanship that went into this piece of history during production and the care that has followed over the years. Thank you for your interest and please call with any questions or to schedule a time to see this Jaguar in person!
