Jaguars Mark V was the first new Jaguar model to come out post-war and was produced from 1948 until 1951. Being the first Jaguar to have independent front suspension, hydraulic brakes, fender skirts, and sealed headlamps, while also being the last Jaguar to use a pushrod engine, makes these cars highly collectable. The saloon style that started back in 1935 would come to an end with the Mark V being the last model with the signature pre-war looks with a drophead design available. A total of 10,499 were built during the few years of production, of which 1,005 which 3-Position Drophead Coupes, but few were made as left-hand-drive models featuring the coveted 3.5-liter engine like this example!
We are excited to offer this 1951 Jaguar Mark V Drophead Coupe finished in a classic Coffee and Cream two-tone combination with a comfortable Biscuit leather interior. Powering this Mark V is a 3442cc Inline 6-cylinder engine with dual SU carburetors upfitted from an early Mark VII rated at 160 horsepower/195 ft. lbs. of torque mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. Features include 3-position top, coach doors, hydraulic brakes all around, massive Lucas P100 headlamps, dual fender mounted side mirrors, Smith instrumentation, color matched painted wheels with hubcaps, and wide whitewall 6.50-16 Firestone Deluxe Champion tires.
Having only 2 owners in the past 68 years, this vehicle was purchased in 1953 from Boch Motors of Norwood, MA by a graduate of the U.S. Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI who used it as his personal transportation. After a few years, he elected to upgrade the original pushrod engine in this Jaguar to a slightly newer XK-generation DOHC 3.4L engine(#A2820-8 with matching head) from a Mark VII (1950-1954) that added around 40 horsepower over its original pushrod variant, along with Mark IV front fenders to adapt the earlier, independent Lucas P100 chrome headlamps. After several more years of enjoyment, he would somewhat retire the vehicle for more modern transportation, and it would be parked mostly unused until the early 1980's. By this time, it would need a full recommissioning, and over approximately 9 years, a careful restoration process would be completed by both English Auto in Searsport, ME and British Auto USA in Manchester, NH who would completely refurbish this Jaguar inside and out by 1990. It was at this time when the car would take on its popular Coffee and Cream color scheme and the interior would be retrimmed with the dash wood veneer.
Since its 30-year-old restoration, this final year, mildly customized Mark V has been sparingly used and would mainly be kept as a garage display, having been driven just over 300 miles according to the odometer. Upon arrival to our museum, we committed service for this Jaguar with installation of two new rear wheel cylinders, rebuilt the brake master cylinder, bled the brakes, changed the oil and oil filter, replaced the starter solenoid, carb gaskets, spark plugs, heater hose, radiator hose, radiator cap seal, front & rear engine mounts, wiper blades, anti-roll bar bushings, and detailed the vehicle inside and out for a fresh overall presentation. Having rested for a good period, this Jaguar now shows some patina upon closer inspection once again, both inside and out.
With its recent attention to be roadworthy again, we are proud to report it starts, runs, and drives with great enthusiasm and power, brakes very confidently, and shifts through the gears with perfect ease! For the loyal driver enthusiast, this Mark V should make for an exciting addition to your collection not to be missed! It is priced well below concours value for such a rare Drophead example, so act quickly.
