The newly revised fourth generation Thunderbird hit the streets in 1964 showcasing crisper body lines, squaring off at the fenders at the front and rear. It maintained the quad headlights and wheelbase of the previous design, along with similar grill and bumpers. The popular sequential rear turn signals were incorporated in 1965, made even more famous as an attribute on Carol Shelby's GT Mustangs. Also new for 1965 were standard power front disc brakes aiding in superior stopping power.
The final year of this generation came about in 1966, with a full revision of the front grill, introduction of the single blade style front bumper, and a unique full length rear taillight panel. It would also be the last year you could own a Thunderbird Convertible until the retroversion designed for 2002, and the first year you can order the larger 428ci V8 under the hood! This new 7.0L FE big block produced 345 horsepower/462 lb. ft. of torque with 10.5:1 compression and Holley carburetion, all backed by the durable C6 3-speed automatic transmission and 9” rear end with 31-spline axles! Only 5,049 convertibles would be produced in 1966, with fewer packing the 428ci power plant, making this particular “America's Personal Luxury Car” from Ford a rare commodity to have in any collection!
We are proud to offer this very well kept 1966 Ford Thunderbird convertible that was originally factory painted as Wimbledon White and has now been refinished in Candy Apple Red paint while keeping its White convertible top and Black leather interior. Powering this Thunderbird is a factory date-code correct big block 428ci V8 mated to a rebuilt C-6 3-speed automatic transmission with a shift kit installed. This t-bird has many desired features including air conditioning, power brakes, power windows, power vents, reclining seat & headrest, power driver seat, the original working AM/FM tape radio, tinted window glass, highway pilot controls, overhead safety convenience panel, Tilt-away steering wheel, and McLean wire spoke wheels wrapped in Milestar Touring white wall tires measuring 225/75R15. As of now the cruise control and power antennae are intact but inoperable.
The odometer was reset during the restoration process and now shows that the vehicle has only been driven 4,347 miles since completion. The engine was rebuilt with hardened valve guides and bored .030 over and to note that unleaded gas is acceptable to use so there's no need for any additional work or mixing of fuel to get this car running smoothly. The drive shaft was professionally balanced with new u-joints and a new Ford 9" rear end was painted to the correct oxide red color for installation. Ensuring the originality of this Thunderbird, all the suspension parts including the springs, bushings, and tie rod ends were replaced with direct fit replacements and the brakes as well have been rebuilt to original like new condition. The convertible top has been well cared for over the years and all its moving parts have been replaced including hydraulic cylinders and pump during restoration. The body is in great condition and side moldings along with fender skirts are indeed the originals, the exterior badging has been replaced and the interior features rebuilt speedometer/odometer and clock.
Originality was kept in high priority during this meticulous restoration and all parts were replaced with NOS or as close as possible to the factory originals down to the correct plunger rivets for the original data ID plate. Included with the vehicle are some original documentations such as some laminated Ford sales literature from the original dealership, key ignition blanks, Ford carbon delivery record, shop manuals and an owner's manual. This Thunderbird was judged at the 50th anniversary Vintage Thunderbird Club International (VTCI) show in Portland, Oregon in 2005 and was awarded 250.5 points out of a perfect score being 300.
