Named for the popular Warner Brothers cartoon character, the Road Runner, Plymouth manufactured it with no frills and few amenities in order to save cost and weight on top of the Belvedere platform. It would have the cartoon's famous “Beep Beep” sounding horn as standard equipment of course! Known for being far less fragile than its competitors at Ford and Chevrolet, the Road Runner was preferred by those who desired serious street applications in high-performance cars, and is fabled to have been the favorite of Moon Shiners based on its power, light weight, ground clearance, and greater durability than its law enforcement counterparts. It would hit showrooms for the first time in 1968 with Plymouth engineers hoping to see 20,000 units produced. Their first year popularity actually achieved more than twice that figure! And today, they continue to be a favorite among MOPAR collectors and muscle car enthusiasts alike!

This nicely restored 1968 Plymouth Roadrunner Hardtop was refinished in factory code correct JJ1- Ember Gold Metallic over high grade H4X- Black vinyl split bench interior during a restoration completed in approximately 2006. In proper fashion, all necessary components were removed including all glass to perform a professional base coat/ clear coat finish to the exterior. All new window seals and soft body weather stripping were installed upon completion, along with new fuel tank, lines, all suspension components, and throaty dual exhaust system with Megs tips! Additional options include power steering, black vinyl roof, Solid-State AM pushbutton radio with dual rear seat speakers, polished 15” Magnum 500 wheels wrapped in staggered BF Goodrich Radial T/A RWL tires measuring 235/60R15 up front and 275/60R15 at the rear, front sway bar, 3-speed wipers, day/night rearview mirror, drivers remote outside mirror, front & rear lap belts, carpeted floor mats, and roof rail drip moldings.

The original, number's matching drivetrain was more recently rebuilt in 2013 with a .040 bore of the cylinders, new pistons & rings, and MOPAR purple performance camshaft kit with new hydraulic lifters. The A727 Torqueflite transmission was rebuilt professionally, and the rear axle treated to a similar overhaul and upgraded 3.55 Sure-Grip gearing in place of the original 3.23:1 set-up. Factory rated at producing 335 horsepower, it should thrill any MOPAR enthusiast once cruising the open road! Upon reinstallation of the engine, it was professionally fitted with the VintageAir Gen IV Sure Fit HVAC system utilizing their modern electronic servo motor controls and billet aluminum pulleys. A wonderful addition to extend the enjoyment factor during the hotter summer months. And the under-hood detail presentation is spectacular and should make any new owner very proud to display it at car show events!

Enhancements in 2022 included Pertronix ignition, Edelbrock electric fuel pump, new date-code correct windshield & seal, and rebalanced driveshaft with fresh u-joints.
