On March 9th, 1964, Lee Iacocca made himself an eternal place in American automotive history with the release of a car that would reshape the design and performance expectations for all automobiles sold within the North American market within the next forty years—the Ford Mustang. By early March of 1966, Ford had already sold 1,000,000 Mustangs. The seemingly endless array of possibilities meant that anyone from young teenage boys to grandmothers could spec their Mustang out in various flavors from mild to wild. There were still three body styles, four engine choices, a plethora of interior/exterior colors, and dozens of options. All said and done, another 607,000 Mustangs found homes in 1966!
We are very excited to offer this 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe! This car is finished as it was from the factory in Code T- Candyapple Red with 66- Deluxe Black Pony interior. It comes fitted with its original 200ci Inline 6 cylinder, 3-speed manual transmission, and 3.20:1 axle ratio. Options on the car are minimal and showcase just how basic you could order a sporty Mustang on a budget! This car was purchased new by John and Norma Polson from Reading Motor Sales, Inc. based in Reading, Pennsylvania on October 20th,1965 with only the options they felt they needed. The engine was more than powerful enough offering a modest 200 horsepower, and shifting through the gears added a nice, sporty element for a weekend cruiser. Additionally, they opted for the Interior Décor Group for the enhanced faux wood-trimmed dash, steering wheel, door handles, and Pony-embossed seating upholstery. It also came with 6.95x14 white sidewall tires, pushbutton AM Radio, rubber floor mats, interior courtesy lights, windshield washer, heater/defrost, and seatbelts front and rear. The wire spoke hubcaps were added later during restoration, but the originals are included with the sale.
The Polson's cherished this Mustang for the better part of 13 years before it was passed on to their son, long time restoration expert, David Polson, who would commence a comprehensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration beginning in 1979 and completion in 1980. It included a complete bare metal repaint of the exterior, new windshield, new stainless window trim, chrome bumpers, door vent chrome, rocker moldings, door handles, emblems, and weather stripping. Inside, the carpeting was replaced, but otherwise retains all factory original upholstery, door panels, dash, etc. The underside of the car was fully painted and received all new suspension and braking components while the drivetrain was removed.
The original engine was completely rebuilt by Svoboda's Automotive after it was cleaned, magnafluxed, line-honed, and deglazed. The crankshaft was ground and fitted with new pistons/rings, main bearings, rod bearings, oil lines, freeze plugs, new camshaft, cam bearings, etc. The original head was also reconditioned after a similar cleaning and magnaflux, then resurfaced and fitted with new all new intake/exhaust valves, springs, keepers, & seals. The transmission was fully rebuilt internally, then received a new clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, and fresh flywheel. It stayed with David Polson until 2022 before it would be offered to the public again. This delightfully charming Mustang continues to perform magnificently, and we are proud to have it among our collection!
It will come with receipts and records documenting the mechanical restoration, the original window sticker, purchase order, original record of payment, owner's manual, original door tag, fender buck tag, drivetrain component identification tags, two sets of keys, original wiring diagram, and workshop manual. In the trunk remains a complete full size spare tire with original hubcaps, original jack & racket lug wrench along with storage bag, & vinyl trunk mat! This Mustang car survives today with that older restoration that would fool many eyes into thinking it was fresh. The paint and chrome are still very impressive with just a few areas showing their age. All components on the car were replaced with OEM Ford originals at the time of restoration assuring everything remains as correct as possible. The fender stamp is clearly visible and body panel gaps are excellent!
This is one of those cars that could make any enthusiast smile just opening and closing the doors or hood. More so than a lot of other Mustangs we have had our hands on, simply stepping in this one family owned car will make you feel like you are in 1966 and taking delivery of your new, shiny red Mustang!
