1996 excalibur series vi phaeton

Working for Studebaker at the time, Brooks Stevens was asked to come up with an eye-catching car to be the star of its motor show. Steven's idea was to create a car with modern running technology but with the style of an exotic pre-war design. The vehicle he chose to base his concept on was the Mercedes-Benz SSK. The two-seater Studebaker SS roadster was a fiberglass body on top of a Studebaker Lark Daytona chassis and made its debut in 1964 at the New York Auto Show where Stevens was successful in creating a show-stealing, stand out design.

Unfortunately, Studebaker was on a downhill path and even the new interest in the roadster could not save the company, and as the year came to an end so did Studebaker. Stevens was proud of his design and with the help of his two sons he began his own company called SS Automobiles to solely showcase his innovative design, which he called the Excalibur SSK, and began production in 1965. In 1966 Stevens and his company introduced a four-seater Phaeton version of the Excalibur and it being more practical began outselling the Roadster. Excalibur proved to be an outstanding luxury option for many years to come with the Series II debuting in 1970 and the tradition of changing models every five years began.

Stevens continued until 1986 with the Series IV being the last to be produced by his company. Due to high costs and customers not being able to keep up with the price tags he filed for bankruptcy in 1986 and closed the doors. Although the original company ended, the Excalibur lived on as the Excalibur Marketing Corporation created in 1987 but was short lived as they faced similar problems as Stevens and closed its doors in 1990. After another exchange in rights of ownership, the Excalibur was revived in 1991 and the Series VI was launched and around two dozen SSK Phaetons were produced, alongside a rather successful Shelby Cobra replica under their expertise. The Excalibur faced many government restrictions having to meet modern emissions standards as well as safety requirements, and like many small manufacturers before it, expensive regulations forced production to cease. The last Excalibur was made in 1997 as a final special edition version.

Offered here is truly the last of a neoclassic breed of style reminiscent of the pre-war era. Modeled when style was king during the 1930s, and the Mercedes SSK reigned supreme in power and elegance! This Excalibur Phaeton has all the traditional vintage looks combined with the modern technology of its production era. Featuring a Chevrolet L98-350ci 5.7L V8 producing 225 horsepower with a 4-speed overdrive automatic transmission, it comes loaded with options including cold air conditioning, heater, power brakes, power windows & locks, power mirrors, power controlled front seating, power front disc brakes, driver side airbag, and cruise control as standard equipment.

Options unique to the Excalibur feature an electric air horn system mounted on the front, a Sony AM/FM/cassette player, dual mounted spotlights, eye-catching blue metallic paint with semi-power folding blue fabric convertible top, and soft red leather interior with blue accent piping. Chromed stainless-steel wire spoke wheels wrapped in Uniroyal Tiger Paw whitewall tires hug the road, while copious amounts of polished stainless brightwork to include the bumpers, grill, headlights, windshield surround, and trim moldings really combine well with the blue metallic exterior paint and red accent pinstriping! One of last exclusively built and uniquely bespoke automobiles of its day!

Displaying only 2,448 original miles, this offers an opportunity to own a fabulously stylish automobile with a host of modern conveniences and fuel injected V8 performance! With production of the Series VI Phaetons being so limited, this is the chance of a lifetime to own a truly unique piece of Excalibur Automobile history. One could call this the holy grail of Excaliburs as you will likely never see another! Thank you for your interest and please contact our sales team with any questions or schedule a visit to our museum to see this beauty in person!
