Chevrolet was coming out of a short production year in 1971 and found eager customers ready to make way for showrooms in 1972. It would mark the final year of the desired chrome bumpers in the front and rear, concealed wipers under a vacuum operated door, and the exit of traditional SAE Gross horsepower ratings. Now SAE Net ratings were determined after things like the air cleaner, transmission, and rear axle loads were factored in. Horsepower was identical to 1971, although printed output was significantly lower, this didn't seem to affect the customers flocking to the dealerships to purchase a new Corvette at all. Today they continue to be quite desirable!
This third generation 1972 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe is now finished in Mille Miglia Red (original paint code 912- Sunflower Yellow) over interior code 400- Black Vinyl which remains in great condition. Under the hood lies a period correct 350ci V8 engine (cast number 3970010) with some changes that anyone with a bit of a heavy foot would enjoy! It was upgraded to a very popular 383ci stroker crank which produces more horsepower and torque! You will also find an Edelbrock Performer 2101 aluminum intake installed along with a Holley performance 4-barrel carburetor. A modern electric ignition system utilizing a Mallory Unilite distributor and ignition coil, as well as Hooker long tube headers feeding classic chrome side pipes! Adding a bit of a custom touch are Edelbrock finned aluminum valve covers and a chrome air cleaner to combine for a sharp dressed engine bay! Additional options include factory air conditioning, power disc brakes, power steering, removable T-Tops, Astro Ventilation glass, and dual side mirrors!
This solid example was found in San Diego, California in 2005 by an enthusiast collector out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who elected to commence a mechanical restoration. This began with the uprated complete engine done by South Florida Crank and Machine in 2009, Isky racing cam, aluminum radiator and radiator support, headers with side exit exhaust and a brand-new flywheel while keeping the number's matching Muncie 4-speed wide ratio transmission and factory 3.36:1 Posi-Traction rear axle ratio. He would renew the entire braking system with new calipers, pads, and rotors; new gas tank and hoses; as well as the suspension with all new KYB Gas-A-Just shocks in front & rear, new rear leaf spring by Triangle, and Vette Brake Products HD steering tie rods, coil springs, and power steering control valve.
He would come to sell his Corvette in June 2020 to a local acquaintance also residing in Fort Lauderdale. This new owner tackled a full overhaul of the air conditioning system in March 2021 to better manage the Florida summers with a newly rebuilt compressor, hose assembly, a/c drive belt, receiver drier, new expansion valve, blower fan, vacuum check valve, and thermostat. Later that summer in July of 2021 the steering gear box was rebuilt with new rag joint and installed new polyurethane rear sway bar end links and mount bushings. Brand new rally wheels, center caps, trim rings were fitted with fresh BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires measuring 225/70R15 as well.
We acquired this Corvette Coupe in December 2021, and we serviced it to include a new carburetor accelerator pump & fast idle solenoid; fuel filter, fresh spark plugs and wire retainers, exhaust manifold gaskets, new battery, starter ignition switch, oil change with filter, air filter, wiper blades, valve cover gaskets; headlight door actuators, headlight/wiper door actuator relay, and vacuum reserve check valve for the headlights. It is a very strong driver with very solid body and chassis attributes and rust-free birdcage. The paintwork shows as an older finish with some cracking/shrinkage in areas as well as touch-up on door edges and front end. We are confident the mechanical aspects will prove this is a worthy investment for the Corvette driver enthusiast who may wish to take it back to its original Sunflower Yellow color one day in the future. Finding a chrome bumper example with these options, and in this price range, is becoming challenging in an exciting collector car market. Please be sure to contact our sales team with any additional questions or to schedule an inspection! Thanks for looking!
