History About Opel And Their GT Model:
The Opel manufacturing company was established in Germany in 1862 producing sewing machines initially, distributing them throughout Europe. Eventually, Opel would become the world's largest bicycle manufacturer, and by 1899, they built its first automobile. Sadly, many auto enthusiasts know very little about the Opel Automobile Company. General Motors, on the other hand, took notice by purchasing an 80% stake in the company in 1929 becoming majority owner of the German company. GM would go on to acquire the balance of the company by 1931, and become Europe's largest auto manufacturer by 1936, all while continuing to produce bicycles until 1937! Opel's volume based products were affordable and focused towards the economical buyer, all with a steel chassis and body. After WWII, production would resume in 1946, but it would take until 1950 before the war destroyed plant would be fully restored. Opel would go on to become Germany's largest auto maker by 1972, now producing an attractive sports car platform called the GT!
The Opel GT is a sleek, curvy two-seater with a robust 4-cylinder engine positioned up front with power directed to the rear. It was often said to resemble the newly styled Corvette C3 body, introduced that same model year. Engine choices were an 1100cc producing 67 horsepower, or the more a popular 1900cc 4-cylinder cam-in-head option that produced 102 horsepower. With US emissions requirements though, engine compression was lowered and horsepower dropped to a modest 83 horsepower in 1971. The steel bodies were a uni-body design with a front, mid-engine and rear wheel drive layout. An A-arm/transverse leaf spring combination front suspension, and coil sprung live rear axle easy supply this lightweight coupe solid handling, while the power-assisted front disc/rear drums supply the stopping power. A 4-speed manual transmission was standard with availability of an automatic transmission. The unique roll-over headlights are manually operated by the driver with a console lever that you simply push or pull to open and close!
About Our Available Opel GT Example:
We are proud to offer for sale a first generation, 1971 Opel GT Coupe finished in attractive Flame Red over Black textured vinyl interior. Power comes from the 1900cc Inline 4-cylinder engine (19S) with a Weber 26/27 carburetor conversion and factory 4-speed manual transmission. This super solid example includes the Luxus style trim group displaying chrome accent trim around all windows. Additional features include high-back bucket seats, dual chrome Talbot-style racing mirrors, full VDO instrumentation with 150mph speedometer, faux wood steering wheel, windshield washer, updated Kenwood AM/FM/CD audio system with Marantz speakers, LED overhead interior courtesy lights, and wider 15” XXR alloy wheels wrapped in new Kuhmo tires!
This wonderful Opel GT was just recently driven some 840 miles by the former owner of 10 years. This trip beginning in southwestern Pennsylvania and ending in Missouri! A feat to prove the mechanical soundness this terrific example has to offer. This beautiful classic sports car showcases an older repaint that has been driven and enjoyed, being best described as driver-quality, with an interior that remains very sharp and conducive for a 81,000 mile car like this one. More importantly, the body and underlying chassis remain rust free and exceptionally solid throughout! Door and hood panels are solid with tight gaps, with factory spot welds and crimp points in remarkable condition! This likely due to a Zeibart rust-proofing treatment when new. It is important to note that the passenger side headlight cover does have a dent on the lower, front edge.
The spare tire, jack, and lug wrench are present in the rear storage shelf, and the original 13x5” Opel steel wheels, trim rings, and center caps are included with the sale. All window glass is original Sekurit, with a Triplex front windshield. Our experts feel one would have a tough time finding a more exciting vehicle to drive for the money! This ready to enjoy classic offers a terrifically roomy cabin for tall drivers, a comfortable driving position, and a sporty exhaust note to further delight your senses as you shift through the gears! The engine encourages you to push up the rpm's to provide the power band through the upper revs, handling any curvy roads you throw at it in the meantime.
