1963 rolls royce silver cloud iii saloon

Sold at the St. Louis Car Museum is a 1963 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Saloon with 81,000 miles on the odometer. This classic Rolls Royce is finished in a two-tone Shell Grey/Tudor Grey combination! A fantastic, that's nicely equipped with electric window, air conditioning, AM/FM/Cassette radio, outside mirrors, Lucas fog lamps, and radial whitewall tires. The eye-catching model remains very original with a numbers matching drivetrain and excellent looks throughout!

Brief History About The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Model:
Replacing the important but not tremendously popular Silver Dawn in 1955 was the Silver Cloud, offering body-on-frame construction, permitting both the typical Pressed Steel Company bodies but also alternate configurations. In its sophomore year, the Silver Cloud introduced power steering and air conditioning to the Rolls-Royce line for the first time. It was successful, but by 1959 Rolls-Royce sought to further separate itself from the competition and introduced a new 6.2L V8 to replace the old 4.9L Inline 6. This car became the Silver Cloud II and was equally successful over its three year run, where power steering became standard and power windows found their way onto the option list. But the ultimate Silver Cloud was released in 1963; featuring a 220 lb. lighter body from the use of aluminum door, hood, and trunk panels, with new quad headlights, upgraded 2” SU carburetors replacing the previous 1¾” units, and 9:1 compression. The Silver Cloud III became one of the best high speed luxury saloons of the 1960's and should be the staple in any Rolls-Royce collection for its combination of elegant styling with modern drivability.

About Our Sold Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Example:
We are pleased to have represented the sale of a stand-out 1963 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III finished in two-tone Shell Grey and Tudor Grey combination over Beige Leather interior, Fawn headliner and Cumberland Stone carpets! This classic Rolls Royce is fitted with its original, number matching 6.2L V8 engine with Hydramatic automatic transmission and 3.50:1 rear axle, it continues to start, run, and drive wonderfully! Optioned from the factory with Rolls Royce electric windows, white-sided tubeless tires (now American Classic 235/75R15 radials), plain Sundyn window glass, radio with Delco-Remy aerial (antenna), lambskin rugs in Cumberland Stone, and 9-piece fitted luggage (unfortunately now absent).

It was originally ordered new by Mrs. McCormick, widow to the Tribune Company owner and media mogul. Colonel McCormick was the sole owner of the Chicago Tribune, later WGN Radio and WGN-TV as a prominent news outlet for reporters. WGN stood for “World's Greatest Newspaper." At 75, he passed away leaving his legacy to his wife, Maryland in '55. She would order this elegant Silver Cloud III in late 1962, taking delivery in January 1963 while residing at her Washington D.C. residence, now officially known today as the McCormick House, home to the Brazilian Ambassador to the United States.

The vehicle would then fall into the care to Dr. Douglas Gebbie in 1989 from the Cincinnati, OH area, before he later took it to his Naples, FL home soon afterward. Under his care, it would be repainted professionally in the mid-1990's. It then made its way to another RROC member, Robert T., from Illinois in 2006 with 66,000 miles on the odometer. It continued to be pampered receiving proper care by Tom Nutting Service of Lake Forest, IL with parts coming from White Post Restorations or Albers Bentley-Zionsville over the years of his ownership. This included rebuilt generator in 2006, new front seat leathers in 2007, both brake master cylinders in 2009, new radiator and all new brake cylinders and shoes in 2010, along with a new wiper motor in 2016. It was shown avidly within the Lake Michigan Region RROC with show participation ribbons from 2006-2014 included with the sale. The most recent owner hailed from the Nashville area, who also found Nashville British Car Club the best way to show off this stunning Cloud III Saloon! In 2018, at 81,232 miles, he had both brake fluid reservoirs replaced with new hoses, gaskets, screens, and seals, with all new Castrol LMA fluid in the brake system, new gear reduction starter, handbrake return springs and new driver's side window motor installed through JD's Britich Cars, Inc.

The exterior paint has been beautifully kept, while the chrome and much of the interior upholstery remain largely original. All upper door panel wood trim has been re-varnished in our opinion while the dash and picnic tray tables remain original. The rear leathers and door panels have been lightly re-dyed to restore their original color. Overall, we would rate the car's appearance as 'very good' preserving a striking presentation both inside and out. It is complete with small tool set (missing two items), complete large tool set with flashlight, spare tire, all factory Triplex XXX glass, original carburetors, Lucas components, chassis/build sheet copies provided courtesy of the Rolls Royce Foundation. It also retains all original body tags and proper chassis plates.

Upon arrival to our Museum, we performed the following services in preparation for sale: replacement of the valve cover gaskets, completely cleaned both carburetors, floats, and screens, fuel filters, new 20W50 engine oil and filter, installed new spark plugs, replaced upper suspension spindle pin and bushing, front upper bump stops, cleaned all brake shoes and adjusted rears properly to drum, and lubed the entire chassis.
