The Corvettewas geared up from some significant changes leaving the 1971 modelyear, and not necessarily to their appearance. It would be the lastof the chrome front & rear bumpers, bright egg crate style grillwith matching side fender vents, but the biggest change came by wayof the measuring criteria of reported horsepower. Althoughidentical to 1971 in every way, the reported horsepower was nolonger gross horsepower, but instead now listed by net horsepowerafter things like the air cleaner, exhaust systems, and accessorieswere taken into account. This meant the standard horsepower of thebase engine option was no longer 270hp, but advertised as 200hp. Itdidnt seem to affect Corvette buyers though, as productionincreased by nearly 30 percent!
