The MGA is long hailed as one of British Motor Corporation best looking creations. Modeled for debut in 1955, it appeared with elegant curves that truly highlighted the all new classy, English roadster. British Motor Company had held onto its full-fendered, pre-war characteristic style well after most car manufactures had abandoned them for sleeker lines and aerodynamics.
The MGA in all respects was a beautifully designed English sports car that retained all the underlying performance spirit of the T-Series it would replace, and had already proven on the track. It has cemented itself in the collector car world as a must-have for driver enthusiasts! As with all things motorsports, drivers seem to have an insatiable need to go faster! Heeding their responsibility to offer a competition model, BMC immediately went to work to produce a modified dual overhead camshaft performance engine. This feat came with several years of development before the first offering would hit showrooms in 1958 as the MGA Twin Cam Roadster. More than just an engine swap, the radiator along with the rack & pinion steering had to be moved further forward to make room in the engine compartment. The chassis itself was reinforced to help aid in the additional torque output, along with longer & stiffer steering arms fitted giving a slightly wider track width, a front sway bar installed, and 15 Dunlop knock-off steel wheels with 4-wheel disc brakes to provide suitable road manners and ample stopping power. Factory rated at107hp with a 9.9:1 compression ratio, it was quite a leap from the standard 78hp base MGA engine. Only 2,111 Twin Cams would be built between 1958-1960 making them an exceptionally rare British sportscar to find on the market today!
We are delighted to offer this remarkable 1959 MGA Twin Cam Roadster finished in factory correct Dove Gray with Red Leather interior! This Twin Cam Roadster has seen an exhaustive nut & bolt restoration by a passionate owner between 2004-2008. With absolute nothing left untouched, it is fair to say this beautiful Twin Cam far exceeds the quality of most, and likely one of the finest around! Options include its original1588cc engine with DOHC alloy head and twin SU H6 carburetors,4-speed manual transmission, NOS 15x4 Dunlop wheels wrapped in Vredestein 165HR Sprint Classics tires, Dunlop disc brakes, Armstrong shock absorbers, twin batteries, Smiths instrumentation with correct 7K RPM tachometer, heater, telescoping steering column with wood steering wheel, fog light, black canvass convertible soft top, aluminum side curtains with storage bag hidden nicely behind the seat, and a very rare aluminum hardtop with custom storage rack!
The restoration was fully documented with much of the service receipts, paperwork, owners manuals, photographs, and workshop manuals all included. The engine was fully rebuilt by engine specialist, David Brown, of David Brown Vintage Auto Engines based in Downers Grove, IL. He completely hot-tanked all engine components and magna fluxed the crankshaft & connecting rods. The block would be bored, align-honed, & resurfaced slightly at .006.The crankshaft would be polished, new Arias 76.5mm low compression pistons installed, resized & balanced the connecting rods, new Vandervell NOS rod bearings installed, cam bearings, & main bearings; regrind & lap valves, new half-speed shaft thrust plate; ARP head studs, rod bolts, main stud nuts, and oil pump, along with complete valve adjustments, hoses, belts, new water pump, rebuilt starter & generator, and updated Pertronix ignition hidden inside the factory distributor. This finished engine would sent to PHP Racengines, Inc. in Wauconda, IL for final run-in & tuning, resulting in 113 horsepower at 6k RPM and 107 ft. lbs. of torque! All gauges were rebuilt by Nissonger, the handbrake mechanism rebuilt by Todd Clarke and re-chromed, all exterior bright work re-chromed, the Dunlop calipers restored along with clutch & brake master cylinders, pads, & rotors by White Post Restorations, all new stainless steel exhaust system, new stainless steel fuel lines with restored SU fuel pump & sending unit, shock absorbers rebuilt by Apple Hydraulics, rebuilt rear end with new bearings and 4.10:1gearing (originally 4.30:1), all new wiring harness, and so much more!
The car is an absolutely rust free Twin Cam Roadster that received all new wood floorboards, and a frame that was sand-blasted and painted. After extensive body preparation was completed, the exterior body was expertly repainted using PPG Deltron basecoat/clearcoat application in factory correct DoveGray. The all-new leather interior & carpeting was completed by Heritage Upholstery and nicely highlighted with a competition style steering wheel, period correct Radio mobile radio, all new dash knobs, and original rearview mirror! All weather stripping and rubber was replaced on the entire body, auxiliary hardtop, and side curtains. Included with this car is also an impressive selection of original English tools, tire pump, factory matching spare tire, jack, and hub adapter for balancing the wheels.
We cannot stress enough the quality this car possesses, the level of expertise in the finish work, mechanical soundness and road ready nature this car showcases!
