Very rare early Mustang convertible with D-code High Performance engine option providing 289ci V8 power through a hard to find 4-speed manual transmission! Factory appointed Ford air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, and power folding top are the start to a long list of factory features! Superbly restored by experts Custom Cars Unlimited in true rotisserie form in 2003! The results are still outstanding to this day!!
On March 9th 1964 Lee Iacocca made himself an eternal place in American automotive history with the release of a car that would reshape the design and performance expectations for all automobiles sold within the North American market within the next forty years the Ford Mustang. This early 1964.5 Ford Mustang convertible is finished code correct Wimbledon White over an all new Red Vinyl interior. Built new in Dearborn, Michigan on May 6th, 1964 this solid example has been in the same Tennessee owners meticulous care since 1981!
It was treated to a complete rotisserie restoration in 2003 by specialists Custom Cars Unlimited located in La Grange, IL. This involved a complete exterior repaint in a base coat/clear coat application, replacing all the original exterior chrome, replacing the weather stripping, installing a new convertible top, and all new interior. A complete engine rebuild that included all body and engine wiring harnesses, new radiator, new water pump, fan clutch, hoses &clamps, rebuilt generator, rear main seal, oil pump, and fresh gaskets from the carburetor to the oil pan! The original transmission was professionally rebuilt with new clutch, pressure plate, T-O bearing; and rebuilt rear axle utilizing the original 3.00:1 conventional gearing. The braking system, suspension and fuel systems were all rebuilt, restored, or replaced for new. The final parts list would be far too long to list here.
Under the hood lies a D-code 289ci V8 rated at 210 horsepower and still fitted with its original Ford 4 barrel carburetor with dual resonated exhaust system! Options include rare 4-speed manual transmission, factory air conditioning (fully retrofitted to R134a refrigerant),power steering, power brakes, power convertible top, remote drivers mirror, original Ford AM radio, Rally Pak column gauges, interior Day/Night mirror, reverse lights, windshield washer, front seatbelts, and Deluxe wire wheel hubcaps fitted with 1 radial whitewall tires! The foundation of this car is exceptionally solid and remains well detailed!
A rare find when searching for a survived convertible Mustang these days! Interesting early Mustang attributes are still in full display, including the dual big horns, ventilated core support feeding extra air to the battery tray, generator charging system, and factory date stamped fender and component sheet metal all clearly visible. It will also come with owners manual, convertible boot cover, matching spare tire, jack, and lug wrench. This car has been nicely detailed throughout and just received a recent mechanical service & inspection. The mileage driven since its 2003 completion added only 2,534 miles to the odometer. It shows very well in person and will make any Mustang enthusiast or collector very proud to own!
