Beautifully restored by Airhead Restorations in Buffalo, NY withonly 71 miles on the odometer since completion! BMW's early sportbike with high compression 590cc engine producing a powerful 42horsepower and top speed of 109mph! Rare Scrambler High Pipes,Pagusa seat, and Hella bar end turn signals! BMW was well known forbuilt solid, dependable bikes all through the war effort. Theirsimply look may have overshadowed the refined engineeringunderneath. By 1960, the US market and fully adapted to importmotorcycles from all over the world, which included Japanizemodels. The BMW team jumped into the "sport bike" field with theR-Series in 1955, but increased the horsepower by 20% with theR69/S produced from 1960-1969. This high compression 590cc opposedboxer twin engines now produced 42 horsepower! When tested byCycle World magazine, they were quoted stating "the smoothest, bestfinished, quietest and cleanest motorcycle they've ever enjoyedriding. It would be their choice for a perfect vacation/tourbike." The legacy of BMW engineering one of the best motorcyclesin the world continues yet today. We are very pleased to offer this1962 BMW R69/S recently restored by Airhead Restorations inBuffalo, NY who specializes in vintage 1952-1969 BMW motorcycles.Upon delivery to them from a previous owner, they had the task ofcompleting a total ground up restoration ensuring it to be infactory specifications. This included completely dismantling theframe, swing arms, Earles front fork, and assorted parts to bestripped to bare metal before being painted in zinc primer andbaked, then fully powder coated. The original, number matchingengine was already fully rebuilt, so the Bing carburetors (1/26/69& 1/26/70) where fully disassembled, cleaned, fitted with new jets& floats, and rebuilt all new seals and gaskets. The transmissionreceived equal treatment with a complete media blast of the case,fully cleaned before receiving new bearings, seals, and gaskets.The gears where in perfect condition and retained. The case thenreceived a fresh coat of Eastwood clear satin finish to protectit. The wheel hubs were also dismantled, blasted, and coated withthe same Eastwood satin protectant. The Weinmann rims were, alongwith all parts needing polishing, were sent to Barnes Finishing forpolishing. The wheels were reassembled with new bearings, seals,and all new stainless spokes. They are trued with proper offsetalong with fresh tubes and Heidenan 3.50-18 classic tires, bothfully balanced. The painting of the fenders and tank were completedby Mark Weld along with his famous hand laid pin stripping. An allnew wiring is installed through this R69/S from the late Robert VanVliet, along with new cables. Pictures of the restoration areincluded with the sale. Some nice touches to this particularexample include Albert headlight mirrors with BMW accent emblems,headlight protection trim, Pagusa seat, Hella hand bar turnsignals, and rare scrambler high pipes exhaust system. Like theother stunning 1971 BMW we have listed on the website, this examplehails from the Ray Lamontagne collection. He purchased this bikein May 2016 with a fresh 2 miles on the odometer and has sinceadded only 69 careful miles for a total of 71 miles showing today.It remains very impressive, show & ride ready, and a testament to aBMW culture who wishes to keep them on the road!
