At the close of World War II, the American automobile manufacturersimmediately resumed automobile production, which had been halteddue to their involvements in the war effort. From 1946 until 1948,Ford, General Motors and Chrysler immediately offered "refreshed"versions of their 1941 and 1942 models as they had no time tore-tool and redesign new cars. Hudson did the same in 1946 and1947, but in 1948 introduced an entirely re-designed automobileknown as the "step downs." The Hudson's step-down cars for 1948marked a new direction for the company. The new cars were builtwith a partial uni-body design that had the floor pan on the bottomof the frame rather than on the top. This resulted in one literallystepping down to enter a Hudson. They were sleek, low andaerodynamic. The roofline was low, but there was still plenty ofroom inside. Its low center of gravity made for excellent handling.The new cars appeared on December 7, 1947. "You're face to facewith tomorrow," said the ads. Both dealers and the public wereelated with the new models. Sales for 1948 jumped nearly 50 percentover 1947, and Hudson rose from 13th to 11th place in the market.For the 1951 model year, Hudson offered four different modelspowered by six and eight cylinder engines. The Pacemaker Custom SixSeries was the most popular of the models built. The Pacemaker wasoffered in five different body styles.
