The Corvette was geared up from some significant changes leaving the 1971 model year, and not necessarily to their appearance. It would be the last of the chrome front & rear bumpers, bright egg crate style grill with matching side fender vents, but the biggest change came by way of the measuring criteria of reported horsepower. Although identical to 1971 in every way, the reported horsepower was no longer gross horsepower, but instead now listed by net horsepower after things like the air cleaner, exhaust systems, and accessories were taken into account. This meant the standard horsepower of the base engine option was no longer 270hp, but advertised as 200hp. It didn’t seem to affect Corvette buyers though, as production increased by nearly 30 percent! And with just over 27,000 Corvettes produced in 1972, only 6,508 convertibles would be available for a lucky select few!! This represents a rare opportunity for serious Corvette collectors worldwide!
