Arguably one of Fords most beautiful and enduring classic designs! Gorgeous Galaxie Skyliner Retractable Hardtop Coupe is one of the most nicely optioned examples available with factory Select-Aire air conditioning, power steering & brakes, spotlight mirror, and more! Do not hesitate as these rare, in-demand cars sell quickly!
With its exceptional and unequaled use of stainless steel and chrome accents, folding & retracting hardtop roof, its embodiment of the “Long and Low” style of the time, and its fusion of locomotive & aviation design cues—the Ford Galaxie Skyliner is certainly among the last great contributions to the legacy of Art Deco inspired automotive styling produced in the United States. Representing the final year of production, and one of only 12,915 produced, these Retractable Hardtop Coupes were the most expensive model on Ford showrooms in 1959!
We are very excited to offer this 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner Retractable! Finished in code correct TE- Geranium & Colonial White, with complimenting trim code 48- Radiant Geranium/ Raven Black interior with silver accents! This exceptional and very rare Galaxie Skyliner with retractable hard-top represents the final production year for this classic convertible! Well ahead of its time, these cars demonstrate, perhaps, the pinnacle of 1950’s design as well as mechanical function!
Built new from the Kansas City, Missouri production plant in March 1959, this Skyliner is equipped with the B-code 332ci V8 engine offering 225 horsepower, 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission, 2.91:1 standard rear axle ratio, “Swift Sure” power brakes, power steering, “Select-Aire” air conditioning, working power retractable top, polished aluminum fender skirts, padded dash, push-button Town & Country AM radio, BF Goodrich Silvertown wide whitewall 4-ply tires & full wheel covers, lower rocker trim, and windshield-mounted spotlight rearview mirror! It was frame-on restored approximately 25 years ago and remains one of the most drivable examples available anywhere at any price.
The original condition of the undercarriage and chassis visually support this car spent little to no time in inclement weather conditions. While the floor pans still bear original paint and dealer installed undercoating along the seams. All other body panels show clear spot welds, factory seams, with wonderful body gaps & fitment. Kept by meticulous owners in the past, this Galaxie Skyliner has been with the same former owners for the past 26 years! Upon arrival to the St. Louis Car Museum, we elected to special order the complete set of replacement door panels, recovered armrests, windlace, window cranks, door handles, all dash knobs in proper white, and door sill plates to replace the dated, factory original components. The balance of the interior, mainly the carpet and seating upholstery, were already replaced during the former cosmetic restoration.
We also took the liberty of replacing the entire exhaust with a new system custom bent to match the original. The battery was replaced, new spark plugs & wire set installed, along with all new distributor cap, rotor, condenser, & points. The air conditioning system was rebuilt with new gaskets, and retro-fitted for R134a refrigerant. We also replaced the brake master cylinder, front wheel seals, idler arm bushing, and new fuel sending unit for proper fuel gauge operation. It is a difficult car to criticize, but we would like to mention some spotting in a few select areas of the paint finish. It is best described as bleaching, leaving the color faded when viewed on closer inspection. Please fell welcome to call with additional questions, or to schedule a chance to view the vehicle in person. Do not delay, this car will move fast! We look forward to working with you!
